Leading While You Wait

Hey Shift Leaders👋,
It's been a while.
Life has been lifing.
In fact, life is still lifing. That's part of the reason I took a hiatus from writing.
I convinced myself that I didn't have anything meaningful to say because my own life wasn't fully figured out. I thought I needed clearer answers, a finished chapter, or a success story neatly tied up with a bow before I could share anything of value.
But it's 1am in the morning and I just had an epiphany… so I got out of bed and wrote this down.
Because that belief, that I had nothing to offer until everything was figured out, is just one of the many stories we tell ourselves in a season of waiting. The truth is that we don't have to arrive before we have something to offer.
What I’m Learning in the Waiting
Some of life's greatest lessons are learned in the middle of the journey, not at the destination. The waiting room often teaches us things that success never could: patience, resilience, humility, courage, faith, and the ability to keep showing up when the outcome is uncertain.
I am learning that leadership is not about having answers; it's about continuing to move forward when you don't have the answers. Leadership is not reserved for people who have it all together. It is often forged in the messy middle; the space between where you are and where you hope to be.
Leading While You Wait
Leading while you wait means:
Showing up before you feel ready
Taking the next step before you can see the whole staircase
Sharing what you are learning, even while you are still learning it
Encouraging others while you are still finding your own way.
Choosing hope when certainty is unavailable.
Maybe you are waiting for a new opportunity, a promotion, a breakthrough, healing, clarity, or simply a sign that you are on the right path.
Whatever you are waiting for, don't mistake waiting for stagnation.
You are still growing.
You are still learning.
You are still becoming.
And perhaps that's what leadership looks like in this season; not having it all figured out, but trusting that there is value in the journey itself.
So, here I am.
Still learning. Still growing. Still waiting in some areas.
But no longer waiting to contribute.

Reflect: How has waiting for certainty been holding you back?
Decide: You do not need all the answers to have value, influence, or wisdom to share.
Act: Choose one small way to lead this week while you wait:
Share a lesson you've learned with someone else.
Apply for the opportunity you've been postponing.
Start the project you've been overthinking.
Take one step toward a goal, even if the path ahead isn't fully clear.
The waiting season is not wasted time. Sometimes, it is the very place where leadership is being formed.
Yours truly,
Dr Kenny
