You Are Not Starting From Scratch

An international student in Australia recently reached out to me, feeling discouraged and overwhelmed. Before coming to Australia, they had built years of professional experience and a solid career. Yet after almost a year of applying for jobs, they had been unable to secure work, even in roles well below the level they had previously held. The repeated rejections were starting to erode their confidence and make them question their worth.

We arranged a time to talk.

During our conversation, I shared parts of my own journey and reminded them of something many migrants need to hear: this struggle is not a reflection of your capability. It is often a reflection of how systems are designed and the barriers many migrants face when trying to rebuild their careers in a new country. We also discussed practical ways they could continue building their skills and use the experience they already have to generate some income while they search. I encouraged them to stay flexible about the opportunities they considered, without losing sight of their long-term career goals, and to trust that this season would not last forever.

I could not offer them a job. But I was able to offer something that, in that moment, mattered just as much: perspective, practical guidance, and renewed confidence that their story was far from over.

By the end of our conversation, I could see a shift. Their smile returned. Their confidence seemed restored. They left feeling lighter and more hopeful about what lies ahead.

And I was reminded of why I love the work I do.

I love helping people make sense of difficult situations. I love teaching, solving problems, improving systems, and supporting others as they navigate uncertainty and transition. Whether through my research, teaching, consulting, or mentoring, the most meaningful part of my work has always been helping people see possibilities they may have stopped believing were available to them.

This conversation also stirred something deeper in me. It reaffirmed my desire to do more to support international students and skilled migrants who arrive in Australia full of experience, talent, and ambition, only to find themselves struggling to gain a foothold. Behind every resume is a person carrying hope, responsibility, and the desire to build a better future.

Sometimes what people need most is not an immediate solution. Sometimes they need someone who understands the journey and can remind them that they are not starting from scratch; they are starting from experience. And that experience still matters.

If you are an international student or skilled migrant navigating career uncertainty, know that your experience still matters. This season may feel discouraging, but it does not define your future.

Sometimes the shift you need begins with someone reminding you of what you already bring.

Dr Kenny
