You Don’t Realise You’re Shrinking… Until You Do

You don’t always notice when you’re shrinking. It’s subtle. Gradual. Easy to explain away.
For a few years, I lived in a small town. At the time, it made complete sense. I was raising my kids as a single mum, working full-time, and completing my PhD. I needed a setup that allowed me to manage everything, and it worked.
But after a while, something started to shift. From the outside, it looked like I was holding it all together, but quietly, something in me was changing. I lost my drive. I stopped investing in myself the way I used to. Even the small things I once enjoyed, started to fade.
I had good reasons for it. “I’m not going anywhere.” “There’s not much to do here anyway.”
And those reasons felt valid but I was slowly beginning to settle.
The Quiet Shift
Looking back now, I can see it differently. It wasn’t just about being busy or tired, it was also about what and who I was surrounded by.
When you’re not exposed to spaces that stretch you, inspire you, or reflect the life you want, your world can quietly become smaller… even when your responsibilities are big.
Recently, I made the decision to move to a different city, and the shift surprised me. Nothing dramatic changed overnight, but I felt different. Lighter. More energised. More like ‘myself’ again. I started doing things I had stopped doing. I didn’t suddenly have more time, something in me had just shifted and it made me realise something I hadn’t paid attention to before: Proximity matters

The Power of Proximity
The people we spend time with, the conversations we’re part of, the spaces we work and rest in, the content we consume, and even the voices we allow to influence us... All of these quietly shape us.
Some of these are chosen, others become normal over time without us noticing. They shape our standards. What we accept, what we settle into, and what we believe is possible for us. These things don't always feel like influence, it just feels like life; it feels normal.
That’s what makes it powerful. Because sometimes, without realising it, we start adjusting ourselves to fit the environment we’re in, instead of the life we’re actually growing into. And over time, that can shape the role we start playing in our own circles.
Sometimes, we become the one who has it all together, the one others look up to.
But who are you looking up to?
Where are you being stretched?
Growth is often shaped by what we’re exposed to. And if you’re honest, there are seasons where that exposure starts to shrink a little: same conversations, same routines, same circles. And slowly, without really noticing, your world can start to feel smaller than it used to.
At that point, it may be worth gently opening yourself up to something different: new spaces, new conversations, new people who stretch you in a good way. Nothing may be wrong with where you are. It might just be that there’s more in you that needs a different environment to come back alive.
What I’ve Come to Realise
Beyond discipline or mindset, growth is about proximity. So, if something in you feels like it’s gone quiet… it might not be because you’ve lost your drive. You may have simply outgrown your environment. And sometimes, the most powerful thing you can do is step into spaces that match who you’re becoming.
Reflect: Where in your life have you started to feel smaller, quieter, or less like yourself?
Decide: What kind of environment, energy, or people do you need more of in this next season?
Act: Take one step this week. Step into a new space, start a new conversation, or reconnect with something that stretches you.
Sometimes, the next version of you doesn’t need more effort… it just needs a different environment.
Yours truly,
Dr Kenny

So true. Proximity, associations, conversations we have often shape who we are.
